We, people of goodwill from all walks of life, from all continents, of different creeds and religions, we draw your attention to the threat of an all-out nuclear war which can very easily break out due to deliberate actions by any nuclear state or due to an unintended mistake, human, technical or other.
We are seeing the fact that the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons in a limited or large-scale attack has recently been drastically lowered, bringing the whole world to the brink of nuclear Armageddon.
Many high-ranking military and civilian officials, politicians and experts speak openly about the possibility of using nuclear weapons in a first strike against any nation under numerous pretexts, with the use of low or high power nuclear charges.
In fact, the United States has withdrawn from a series of well-known and useful treaties and agreements on the control of nuclear weapons, for dubious reasons and with illogical explanations.
Nuclear weapons carriers are becoming more sophisticated, faster and more accurate. They are made in a dangerous combination that includes strategic and tactical nuclear weapons along with missile defense systems and conventional capabilities, and with the possibility of placing attack weapons in space, including missile defense systems and anti-satellite weapons.
Many military exercises, which had previously been conducted with the use of conventional weapons, they are gradually turning into exercises with the use of fake nuclear weapons.
Nuclear weapons experts calculate that during a first massive nuclear strike, at least 34 millions of people would die immediately e 57 millions would suffer multiple injuries, which would cause horrible pain, suffering, radiation sickness and death. Furthermore, various types of infrastructure, Flora and fauna, nuclear power plants, water resources, including drinking water and hydroelectric dams, they would be heavily damaged or completely destroyed by massive firestorms, extensive nuclear contamination, powerful explosions and earthquakes.
But this is only the immediate impact. The nuclear winter, if provoked even by a limited nuclear war, it would threaten all of humanity with hunger and other deadly threats.
We who voluntarily signed this appeal we encourage you, as the leader of all nine nuclear nations, to take the following actions in 2020:
First, as an initial step towards complete and irreversible nuclear disarmament on a global scale, that you undertake not to use and denounce any type of use of nuclear weapons in a first strike against any nation at any time.
Second, sign and ratify the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons with the following commitment specified in the next point.
Third, undertake to irreversibly dismantle all nuclear weapons by 6 August 2045 or before that date – in all nine nuclear-armed states, in carefully calibrated phases and through well-developed and mutually acceptable inspection mechanisms, provided that all nuclear-armed states follow this model simultaneously and honestly.
These two proposals are not conclusive. I am a start. They are the most urgent. Other concrete provisions must be worked out without any delay.
