Politics 100 seconds to midnight

The hand of the "Apocalypse Clock" - the symbolic timepiece that in the US Atomic Scientists Bulletin indicates how many minutes we are from midnight of the nuclear war - has been moved forward to 100 seconds to midnight.

It is the highest level of alarm since the "Clock" was created in 1947 (as a term of comparison, the highest level during the cold war was 2 minutes to midnight).

The news, however, passed in Italy almost unnoticed or reported as a sort of curiosity, almost like a video game. We ignore the fact that the alarm was raised by a scientific committee of which they belong 13 Nobel laureates.

They warn: «We are facing a real emergency, an absolutely unacceptable state of the world situation that does not allow any margin for error or further delay ”.

The world crisis, exacerbated by climate change, it makes “nuclear war really possible, started under a plan or by mistake or simple misunderstanding, that would put an end to civilization ".

The possibility of nuclear war - they point out - has been increased by the fact that, last year, several important treaties and negotiations have been canceled or undermined, creating an environment conducive to a renewed nuclear arms race, their proliferation and the lowering of the nuclear threshold.

The situation - add the scientists - is aggravated by "cyber disinformation", that is, from the continuous alteration of the sphere of information, on which democracy and decision-making depend, conducted through disinformation campaigns to sow distrust among nations and undermine domestic and international efforts to foster peace and protect the planet.

What is Italian politics doing in this extremely critical situation? The answer is simple: is silent.

The silence imposed by the vast bipartisan political arc responsible for the fact that Italy prevails, non-nuclear country, hosts and is prepared to use nuclear weapons, violating the Non-Proliferation Treaty it ratified.

This responsibility is made even more serious by the fact that Italy refuses to adhere to the Treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons voted by a large majority by the United Nations Assembly.

To Article 4 the Treaty establishes: “Each State party that has nuclear weapons on its territory, owned or controlled by another state, must ensure the rapid removal of such weapons ". To join the UN Treaty, Italy should therefore require the United States to remove the B-61 nuclear bombs from its territory (that already violate the Non-Proliferation Treaty) and not to install the new B61-12 or other nuclear weapons.

Furthermore, since Italy is one of the countries that (as NATO itself declares) "They provide the Alliance with aircraft equipped to carry nuclear bombs, over which the United States maintains absolute control, and personnel trained for this purpose ", to join the UN Treaty, Italy would have to ask to be exempted from this function.

The same happens with the Intermediate Nuclear Forces Treaty ditched by Washington. Both in NATO headquarters, Ue e Her, Italy has followed the US decision, essentially giving the green light to the installation of new US nuclear missiles on its territory.

This confirms that Italy does not have - due to the responsibility of the vast bipartisan political spectrum - a sovereign foreign policy, responding to the principles of its own Constitution and real national interests. At the helm that determines the fundamental orientations of our foreign policy is the hand of Washington, either directly or through NATO.

Italy, which in its Constitution repudiates war, it is thus part of the mechanism that led us to 100 seconds after midnight of the nuclear war.
